Do you have what it takes to help lead our LGBTQ+ community?
Equality HI started as a small group of friends getting together for pau hana once a month. We quickly realized that many of us were yearning for a queer community here on the Big Island. We got involved volunteering at the Hilo and Kona PRIDE events, and referring each other and our friends to LGBTQ+ resources we heard about through our networks. As our connections grew, we knew we had to share these events, resources, and support with all the fabulous people on the island we hadn't connected with yet. That's what started Equality HI.
And when we got our nonprofit status earlier this year we set some really BIG GOALS.
This fall we will be hosting the first Puna Strong Virtual Resource Fair to help our LGBTQ+ community and all those in Puna recover from the 2018 Kilauea eruption and current COVID-19 pandemic. We are developing resources to educate, support, and empower LGBTQ+ individuals to non-profit and for-profit Board Leadership positions - ensuring our community has a voice in the Board Room.
Long term goals include helping keiki who've lost their homes and/or families because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and providing a safe place for LGBTQ+ seniors to age in place.
Big Goals require Strong Board Members. This is where we need your help.
Equality HI has opened its Board Member nomination process. We are actively seeking dedicated Board Members to help improve the lives and community of LGBTQ+ people here on our island. We strongly encourage diversity and inclusion on our Board and are actively seeking women, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, people of color, people with disabilities, allies and other diverse perspectives.

Legal
Marketing/copywriting
Grant writing
Volunteer management
Information Technology
Human Services (Social Work Case Management)
